From the First Idea to the Final Garment: How a Fashion Collection Is Created

Before a garment reaches the photoshoot, the showroom, or ultimately the woman who will wear it, it has already gone through a process that can take months. And perhaps this is the part of our work that I love the most, because it is where something that initially exists only as a thought slowly begins to become a reality.

Every new collection starts differently for me. It may be a journey, an image, a fabric, a colour combination, or a detail that catches my attention and makes me want to develop it further. There is not always one specific moment when you say, “Now I’m starting.” Usually, ideas gradually come together until they begin to connect and take on a common direction.

With House of Peonies FW27, the starting point was Paris and the peony. Two different references that I wanted to bring together within the same aesthetic. On one hand, the elegance and distinctive energy of Paris, and on the other, a flower that is feminine, bold and instantly recognisable. From there, the world of the new collection began to take shape.

When Inspiration Begins to Take Shape

Inspiration is only the beginning. The next step is to translate it into colours, fabrics, textures, silhouettes and details that can actually become garments.

At this stage, the search for materials begins and the colour palette gradually takes shape. Some fabrics can completely change the initial direction of a design, while a detail such as feathers, fringes or a distinctive texture can ultimately become the element around which an entire look is built.

For House of Peonies, I wanted every piece to have something that made it recognisable, without everything looking the same. This is always one of the greatest challenges. To create different garments that, when seen together, immediately feel as though they belong to the same story.

From the Design to the First Sample

And this is where the most demanding part begins.

The first sample is the moment when an idea leaves the page for the first time and takes on real dimensions. And it is almost never the final version.

The silhouette, length, fit or even an entire element of the garment may need to change. Sometimes a small adjustment is enough, while other times we go almost all the way back to the beginning. It is a process of continuous decisions until what I see in front of me comes as close as possible to what I originally imagined.

And this is something the customer usually never sees. Behind a finished dress, there may be different versions, fittings, alterations and many hours of work before the right balance is achieved.

The Fitting Is the Moment of Truth

A garment can look exactly as you want it to on paper and completely different once it is worn.

During the fitting, we examine everything. The way it embraces the body, where the waist sits, the length, the movement of the fabric and how the garment behaves when the woman walks or moves.

This is where many of the changes that ultimately define the final result are made. Because for me, it is not enough for a garment to look impressive on a hanger or in a photograph. It needs to work on the body and make the woman wearing it feel beautiful.

The Details You Don't Notice at First Glance

As we get closer to the final version, the details become increasingly important.

The choice of a finish, the placement of a fringe, the way a feather is positioned or how a fabric falls may seem like small decisions, but they are the ones that ultimately transform the appearance of a garment.

At this stage, “almost ready” can often still be quite far from truly ready.

From the Final Sample to Production

Once the fittings are complete and the final result has been approved, production begins. For MYA Collection, this stage is particularly important, as our products are made in Greece.

From cutting and sewing to finishing and final quality control, every stage must follow the specifications established throughout the development process. Consistency in fit and the quality of the final result are just as important as the original idea.

Because a design is truly complete only when it can be produced with the same attention to detail that went into creating its very first sample.

The Moment Everything Comes Together

And after months of work, the photoshoot finally arrives.

It is perhaps the first moment when I see all the pieces together exactly as I had imagined them. Styling, models, hair, makeup and the right setting create the final image and bring to life something that, until then, I had mostly seen through samples, fittings and production.

For House of Peonies, this moment was even more meaningful. It was the moment when the original inspiration drawn from Paris and the peony finally transformed into one complete image.

One Last Thought

Perhaps this is the most beautiful part of creating a collection. Seeing something that once existed only in your mind finally become a garment that another woman will wear for a special moment of her own.
